Police: Woman took baby to cover pregnancy lie
A woman took a 2-week-old baby from his West Palm Beach home to cover up her lies about being pregnant and giving birth, according to police.
The baby, Mar’Quan Johnson, was reported missing from the 1400 block of Village Boulevard. Mar'Quan's mother was taking a shower just before 8 a.m. when her baby was kidnapped, police said.
Mar'Quan's mother immediately called police and told them that she believed the kidnapper to be Latonia Alvin Williams, 32. She said Williams was in her apartment, watching the baby, and then they were both gone.
An Amber Alert for Mar'Quan featuring a picture of Williams was put out Friday morning. Police searched all the Tri-Rail stations from West Palm Beach to Miami and bus stations all over the area.
Mar'Quan's paternal grandmother, worried and panicked, spoke to Local 10. She said the baby had just come home from the hospital Sunday.
"I felt it. I hope that the baby’s OK, and I know as a young mother, she’s distraught," said Jannerral Wright, the baby’s grandmother. "I've been trying to call, but her phone is going straight to voicemail."
Someone who had watched the news at noon and had seen the story called 911, which led police to find Williams and the baby in Riviera Beach, police said.
The baby has since been reunited with his mother.
Police were interviewing Williams Friday afternoon.
Police sources said that Alvin had been telling family members and friends for weeks that she was pregnant, so they believe she took the baby with the hope of covering up her lies.
